About the Author

At the age of three, Al Argueta first traveled to Guatemala with his father and was utterly captivated by the country's landscape and its Mayan inhabitants. He would later live in Guatemala for two years, allowing him to formally learn Spanish and to experience Guatemala's culture firsthand. During summers in high school and college, Al often took a month off to travel to Guatemala, exploring its jungles, ruins, and villages. In college, Al majored in Journalism and Latin American Studies, managing to squeeze in two study-abroad programs—one in Manchester and one in Maastricht—and traveled through much of Europe. After college, he interned with Costa Rica's Tico Times, getting his first exposure to travel writing and photography, in addition to covering then-President Bill Clinton's visit to Guatemala. Al worked briefly for a newspaper in the Virgin Islands before moving on to photography school in Hawaii. He also taught English to college students in Thailand for a time, continuing to satiate the travel bug that bit him years back.Al now lives in Austin, Texas, where he's managed to stay put for an unprecedented six years. In addition to writing, he does freelance travel photography for clients that have included National Geographic Adventure, Caribbean Travel & Life, Condé Nast Traveler, Outside's GO, and Continental. This is a very good guidebook about traveling in Guatemala but you need to combine it with Paul Glassman’s classic Guatemala guide! There are accurate and good information about hotels, restaurants places to see. The information I didn't see was about Guatemala’s weather with the different microclimates! This guidebook has two seasons’ dry season and rain season but you will need more information about the weather pattern in Guatemala. Paul Glassman’s book will fill in the missing information about the different micro climates for each place in Guatemala. However I still do recommend this guidebook! Moon guides are normally very well written and packed with information about what to do. I believe Moon Guide to Belize is excellent and Moon Guide to Guatemala almost as good.

I'm a big fan of the Moon Handbooks but this one, which I read before going to Guatemala this March and took with me, is so out-of-date that it's almost useless except for general background. Lonely Planet is a bit better, but in both cases expect prices to be 30-35% higher than what you read here, hotels and restaurants mentioned to often not exist anymore, etc. etc.Really you're better off using TripAdvisor and other web forums.

In error, I bought this book thinking it would be a good companion to other tourist guides of Guatemala. The information it contains, however, is more of interest to an ex-pat who lives in Guatemala already or is planning to move there. In addition to the usual subjects of interest to the tourist, the handbook delves into agrarian reform, soccer team rivalries, disputes with neighboring Belize and other neighbors, deforestation, and more. Buying this book was one of the happiest mistakes I ever made. Thank you, Moon!

We've liked other Moon books, since they give you plenty of information to really do things your own way. This book was similar, with the same great organization and relevant information, but it had some problems. A couple of the places they recommend didn't exist anymore, including one of the major sites to visit.

I have used a Moon Handbook on visits to several other Central American countries and this one is just as I expected. It covers a range of hotels and restaurants and the recommended major attractions and places to visit are pretty much right on. The nature of a Kindle Version makes "thumbing through the pages" and looking at the maps a pretty hard thing to do. It was another useful book for me.

Priceless for when we didn't have WiFi access!Great advice and up to date for most of our adventures in Guatemala

I've been living and studying in Guatemala for seven months now, and each time I venture out and explore, I dutifully check my Moon Guatemala guide...and rarely find it helpful to decide where to stay and how to get there. To me the best and most up to date option is Trip Advisor. Sorry Moon, the rarely-updated travel guides are not useful to me anymore.

I have never bought a Moon travel guide. I am joining my daughter in Guatemala, and she already has 2 other books, so I wanted something different. This guide has good maps, but I wasn't happy with the set-up. The "How to get there" sections on each area didn't really help unless you were going from the location they thought you were. The recommendations for food and lodging didn't include anything on budget range. I won't be buying another Moon guide.
