About the Author
Lyndsey Hookway is an experienced London trained Paediatric Nurse, Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor), International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Holistic Sleep Coach and Birth Trauma Recovery Practitioner, with almost 20 years experience working with infants, children and families in hospitals, neonatal intensive care units, clinics, and the community mainly in the UK, but also in voluntary roles in the Far East and Kenya. Lyndsey has worked in many NHS roles in the UK, and now runs a busy private practice offering group and one-to-one specialist breastfeeding, bottle feeding, gentle sleep, eating, behaviour and parenting support to families Internationally. Lyndsey has published a number of articles in academic journals, as well as parenting magazines regarding breastfeeding, caring for premature babies and sleep issues in children. She is the co-founder of the Holistic Sleep Coaching Program, and regularly teaches health and childcare professionals, lectures as an independent speaker, and hopes to begin her PhD soon. Lyndsey is passionate about addressing the sleep needs of parents committed to gentle parenting by providing quality information and support, balancing realistic expectations of normal sleep with transformative sleep biology which can have a profoundly positive effect on sleep without the need for sleep training.

I am a mother who tried the Ferber method years ago. It was horrible for both my daughter and I. The screaming and the tears ( on both our parts). I lasted one night and said never again. Since that time, I have been dead set against any formal sleep training "methods" as I have witnessed first hand the trauma they cause. As an IBCLC, I am also privy to the damage popular sleep training "methods" cause to parents milk supply, babies weight gain as well as the psychological trauma that I suspect is deeply embedded in every babies DNA.Now here is the good part. The wonderful part. A few very well respected friends, who are also IBCLCs, highly recommended this book. My colleagues said that this will help breastfeeding and milk supply. Really? My immediate reaction when I held the book in my hand was how inviting the cover was and how thick the book is. I was already thinking... how much could there be to this sleep coaching? I then noticed the full title: Holistic Sleep Coaching, Gentle alternatives to sleep training for Health and Childcare Professionals. This book is 347 pages, with the information separated into 2 Sections, with over 56 pages of references.The author, Lyndsey Hookway, gained my interest first with this sentence in the Preface. Yes, I do read Prefaces. "However, the more I have learned, the more I have become certain that supporting parents equally between breastfeeding and sleep is one of the foundations to improving the duration and exclusivity of breastfeeding." As an IBCLC, I know that globally we have done a fabulous job with increasing the breastfeeding initiation rates, however, we are failing when it comes to the duration and exclusivity of breastfeeding rates." I am doing my part to help improve in these areas and after reading this book, I will absolutely and positively be recommending Holistic Sleep Coaching to all my colleagues. Why? Parents are under an enormous amount of stress when they or their children are not getting the proper sleep and it affects all areas of family life. The book is filled with references galore, and a common sense approach to sleep which begins not at 4 weeks or 6 weeks or 2 months, but at 8 months. I appreciate the information, on not only what the average family may go through, but Lyndsey also covers in great depth how to help the family when there are more complex sleep problems. Thank you for this Lyndsey!
