One of the finest beginning jewelry books there is!Wonderful as it uses simple series of photographs to illustrate the process. Certain fine points ore left off but it'll get you started better than any other jewelry making books.A little advice for beginners. Use heavier gauge bezel wire. 26ga won't melt like 28a under the undisciplined torch of a novice. Also get Oxygen Propane torch set up asap! The acetylene will work but it's frustrating and dirty.Other than that observe the photos and see how tool are .. You don't nee the bright shiny bench jewelers tools to make incredible jewelry.El Paso

It's a great book, illustrated with photos of tools, equipment, and silver objects and jewelry laid out in a very clear way. There's lots of info in the photographic layouts, and the layouts show the steps and pieces used to put together the different kinds of silver objects. The two books in this series do more showing (via the photos) then telling by text, although there is explanatory text. It's very succinct, and it's probably good for visual learners. Volume 1 of this series covers more of the more popular types of Native American jewelry like bracelets, rings and necklaces. This book, Volume 2, covers covers more unusual silver objects like horse bridle decorations, thimbles, bells, whistles, belt buckles, boxes, tableware like spoons and forks, some Zuni inlay, and tiny 3 inch tall kachina figures, etc. This volume follows the same informative photo layout style of Volume 1, and you learn some history about the objects and the people who made them as well. The books is 8 1/2 inches wide, and 11 1/2 inches tall, and lays open nicely because it's spiral bound.

I have found this book to be an excellent source of information for the modern metal smith, as it contains many techniques and processes that can be helpful in goldsmithing and silversmithing. I purchased it for a student of mine and ended up using it for inspiration. I also recommend the original Indian Jewelry Making. It is especially useful for the beginning silversmith. Cover to cove colored photography of the highest quality make both books a must have for any serious metalsmith.

Clear, step-by-step photographs illustrate the construction of many of the elements of Southwestern-style jewelry. The accompanying text identifies the materials needed and the techniques used. Additional photographs show how the elements are assembled into finished pieces. Buttons and beads to rings, bracelets and necklaces, belt buckles and conchos, dress and hair ornaments, casting...it's all here. Beginning with a brief history of Navajo jewelry from around 1890 to present accompanied by photos of many vintage pieces, and interspersed with illustrated discussions of tool making and how-tos, this book will serve you well.

Love this book! It covers all types of jewelry and silversmith accessories. Not a step by step how to, but anyone with basic metal working skills would get a lot out of this book. One of the best jewelry books, packed with great information. Rings, belts, necklaces, bracelets, stone inlay ... Including gun handles, jewelry boxes, etc... Love it! Fast shipping too!

I was looking for Part 1 of the original 2 book series published by Treasure Chest Publications in 1979 which is out of print. This book is from Rio Nuevo Publishers and is a reissue and update (2000) containing both part 1 and part 2. The original books are large, 11 1/2" x 8 3/4", so the pictures illustrating techniques are very easy to see. This book is 7" x 9 1/2", which is just a little more than half the size. Both are spiral bound. Comparing it page by page to my original, everything is in the same order and it has all the pages contained in my 1979 Part 2 except two pages on making tableware--which isn't technically jewelry making.I was glad to find this book, but I was a little disappointed as I was expecting the book have the same size pages as the 1979 edition. Otherwise the pictures and the printing are good.

Great book filled with visual ques on how metal jewelry was produced- excellent guide. Though not a how to ppl, an informed metalsmith can readily learn new processes from this book

A better book for the beginning silver smith can not be found. Rather than having a few grainy and nebulous black and white pictures, this book is bright and clear full color photos from beginning to end. This was the very first book on jewelry making that I ever bought. That was back in 1976 and now I am using it for my students. If you are looking to try your hand at silver smithing, give it a go with this book. You won't be disappointed.
