I have other lonely planet travel books and love them... This one... Not so much. It gives me nothing that really matters for my trip. I've been to the islands and wanted info and detailed maps to find places I may have missed the previous trips. I'm taking the time to return the book but I am making the drive to the local bookstore to find something with much better substance. I don't recommend this book at all.
From the description, I thought this book would be the perfect thing for my southern caribbean cruise. Unfortunately, this book merely cut and pasted limited data from previous books and relabeled it a "cruise book". A cruise book should provide a comprehensive list of things to do with a maximum of 8 hours in port. This book listed 2-3 things, and wasted space with dinner reviews. Most ships are long gone by dinner hour.... I was VERY disappointed. Tripadvisor is free and lists multiple excursions/beaches to visit.....
I concur.
I was given a copy of “Cruise Ports Caribbean†by Lonely Planet specifically to write a review. That said, I try to be honest and open in all my reviews.(Please see the enclosed pictures.)I am a fan of the Lonely Planet series. This little book (small enough to tuck into a cargo pocket in your shorts or a pouch on a backpack) is filled with incredibly useful information for your port calls on a Caribbean Cruise. That is an important point. This book is specifically designed for the cruise crowd. It does not have traditional sections on travel, customs, etc., because those items are generally part of the cruise program. You are going to be arriving via cruise ship. There is a large section of the book devoted to Miami because that is where 80%+ of the cruises originate. As with all of the Lonely Planet books the guide is lavishly illustrated with foldout, full color pages, a ton of maps, etc.I love this book!Well done Lonely Planet.
I've used Lonely Planet guides for years and have always found them full of useful, accurate information. I was pleased to find that they now have started publishing guides specifically for the cruise market. It has always been difficult, if not impossible to find a single guide book that included all the information needed for even a week long cruise. It was necessary to get a book for the embarkation port, possibly another one for the disembarkation if not doing a round trip and another one, if not more for the various ports of call. After purchasing all these books then it was necessary to weed out the information that would not be useful to someone with limited time in the port - after all there is no point in learning about a marvelous place that is too far away for you to get to during your time in port. This guide includes the usual information included in Lonely Planet guides - pull out maps, information concerning visas, weather, currency etc. This information is presented in a concise easy to read manner. Embarkation ports are covered in greater detail including transportation to the port, and from airport(s) into town, as well as to the ship terminals. Also included is enough information concerning lodging, entertainment, and restaurants to plan for a few days stay before or after the cruise. The various major cruising lines are described which is helpful in deciding which cruise line to chose. Suggestions relevant specifically to cruising are also included which would be particularly helpful to those new to cruising. The various ports of call through out the Caribbean are described focusing specifically on those attractions and activities that a typical passenger would have enough time in port to visit or do.This is a great guide book to help plan a trip and to take along to get the most out of a cruise.
The Caribbean ports are wonderful, beautiful and complex. Sadly, too many cruise passengers limit their port experiences to the shopping areas that abut the dock. They rarely go much further. They never head into town. Thus they fail to experience the culture or taste the real flavor of the location.Often that’s because they need a good tour guide. And while tour guides can be hired from the cruise lines and independent sources, there is something to be said for a self-guided tours where the person can take in the port at their own pace. Still, diligence is in order. There are places in any port that are safe, some that are less safe and some that are outright dangerous. Yet the “Lonely Planet Cruise Ports Caribbean (Travel Guide)“ offers no help for this.Even so, Lonely Planet offers some great tour books, so we thought that this guide book would just be the thing for our upcoming Caribbean cruise. However, “Lonely Planet Cruise Ports Caribbean (Travel Guide)“ fell short in other ways as well. Yes, there are some maps that include some walking tours and local highlights. Yes, the book covers quite a number of Caribbean countries and ports. And that may, in part, be its downfall. The book tries to cover too much.It would have been preferable if the publisher had divided the Carribean into sections, much as the cruise lines do themselves. They offer Southern Caribbean Cruises, Western Caribbean Cruises, etc. The “Lonely Planet Cruise Ports Caribbean (Travel Guide)“ would have been wise to do the same. They could then divide the Caribbean ports into multiple books and allow each book to explore each port with more depth.
