About the Author

A magna cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College in 1988, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand went on to receive her law degree from the UCLA School of Law in 1991 and served as a law clerk on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. After working as an attorney in New York City for nearly a decade, Gillibrand served as special counsel to Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Andrew Cuomo during the Clinton administration, then as an attorney before serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing New York’s 20th Congressional District, which spans ten counties in upstate New York. Gillibrand was first sworn in as United States senator from New York in January 2009, filling Hillary Rodham Clinton’s seat. In November 2012 she was elected to her first six-year Senate term with 72 percent of the vote, a New York State record, winning sixty of New York’s sixty-two counties. She lives in Troy, New York, with her husband, Jonathan, and their sons, Theo and Henry.

Kirsten Gilibrand has told her story is a genuinely vulnerable way. I share her perspective as a working mom. My own life experiences are so similar. I am truly inspired after reading this book. I am affirmed in my goals to participate in promoting the common good, in holding our government representatives accountable, to promoting more women in office and to help the young people in my life make their dreams a reality.

Great insight into the workings of government, written by a dedicated participant. Inspiration to get involved and not just tolerate things you know are wrong, abound in every chapter. Good writing and can feel Kirsten's strength and determination. Thoroughly enjoyed the book.

The book was interesting and provided some insights into the world of a the female political candidate. As a female working in the corporate world, I felt that she tried too hard to paint herself as "super" mom (ala an old episode from the Mary Tyler Moore show) rather than demanding more support from her husband or just hiring a nanny.

Easy read that I thoroughly enjoyed. It touched on many aspects of my life, so I found it very relevant. Along the same vein of reading as Sheryl Sandberg for those of you who have read Lean In. However Senator Gillibrand' s influence is much deeper and on national topics. Still good motivational read for anyone, especially women, and those interested in politics.

It was an easy read. It was an introductory biography but I found it to be mundane. I was a bit disappointed with the book.

Executives book for my 29 year old son to be inntroduced to politics

I thoroughly loved this book. Lots of great stories from her childhood as well as her adult life, personal anecdotes mean to inspire the reader to stand up and be a leader in their communities. It's very readable and enjoyable. Finished this book in 3 days.

Given the current political situation it seems as good a time as any to get to know New York's junior senator.
