I have 4 editions of "The Complete Works". The RSC, The Bevington, A cheaply made coffee table display version and of course The Complete Pelican. While the RSC will remain my favorite in terms of over all look and scholarly introductions, this is a fantastic edition for anyone looking to study Shakespeare. It is attractive, easy to read and has some fantastic introductory notes to each play. The paper is a tad too thin and you must handle with care or you'll end up with bent, ripped or altogether torn out pages. It should be noted that this edition is based on the second quarto and therefore many of the plays that went through the Q1, Q2 and 1F like Hamlet are a result of this. They do however provide in a separate section the excluded lines and line alterations that would appear in the first folio, so you aren't technically missing anything. The reason I give this warning is that many classes/directors will utilize a first folio edition and therefore you may find yourself at lost with some dialogue or phrases that do not appear in your edition if everyone else is using a first folio version.
This review is to critique the quality of this particular collection and not Shakespeare's writing. This particular collection is exactly what I was hoping for.On the pages of Shakespeare's texts, footnotes containing short comments or definitions are located in a small block in the lower right-hand corner of each page. Each footnote is tied to its location in the text by line number, and the line numbers are placed unobtrusively in the outer margins (see pictures). If you don't need help, you won't be distracted by numbers or superscripts cluttering up the text itself. Also, each text is preceded by useful essays discussing text content. The book itself has an extremely sturdy cloth-covered binding, and even though the book is over 1700 pages long, it opens well and lies flat on just about any page, without putting obvious strain on the binding. Paper quality is mid-quality, but importantly for a book of this size, the sheets are not so thin that printing shows through from the other side. This book should stand up to repeated regular use for a very long time. The book includes a broad satin ribbon bookmark. I looked at several "Complete Shakespeares," and this one was by far the most reasonably priced for the quality, for anyone looking for a "keeper."
On the positive side, it has everything, all his plays and sonnets. On the negative side, it is heavy, the print is small, and the annotations (translations of Elizabethan English) are sparse, and all in tiny footnotes on the bottom of each page. They really don't make the plays appreciably easier to follow, which can make for tedious reading. I have found myself turning to the online sparknotes for translations, time and time again.
Beautiful, complete and essential for anyone's library. Everything one could want from a collection of The Bard's works. I didn't find the text to be too small, or the pages too thin. Contains all the plays, sonnets, songs, and poems- all annotated. A treasure. This is definitely worth the reasonable price for such an elegant book.
Having a one stop shop for Shakespeare is wonderful. As a teacher of English Literature, this volume will allow me to teach multiple plays using the same book. The notes given in the margins are helpful to the uninitiated reader. I will get lots of use out of this book. If you teach English, or even if you are interested in the bard, I would certainly recommend this version. Well edited and well organized, I highly recommend this work to any who have even a passing love of Shakespeare.
Really awesome text. Contains all of Shakespeare's works and is large and easy to read. It also has tons of helpful footnotes and introductions. The paperback is a cheaper alternative to the hard cover but just as good.
I bought this book for a course on the Bard's tragedies. Since I easily grab the wrong text, I decided a complete volume would be the best option. This is the smaller (in size) of most complete works. For those complaining- were you at all surprised that it would be so big? This book is beautifully bound and looks gorgeous sitting on my bookshelf. The essays in the beginning have helped me immensely when outlining papers for my course. A must have for any student of Shakespeare.
Like many English majors in the sixties, I grew up reading this edition. The old one had a distinguished roster of editors and was pleasant to hold and read. In the latter category this new edition is a noble successor: clear type, full names of characters (no more "1 Serv."), and notes indicated by line numbers. This new edition fails however in its skimpy (9 pages!) of introductory matter and a masthead of editors who are fairly obscure. Still, I would award the plume to this volume for the first-time reader who wants a complete Shakespeare. The pleasant appearance that I mentioned above is important--we want a volume easy to handle and read. The editing is conservative and non-controversial (no more of the Oxford/Norton kinky titles--"The First Part of the Contention," sheesh--that's Henry VI, Part 2 to us plebians). And it's not as bulky as the power-lifter's Riverside and other editions. To sum up: if you have in your family or acquaintance a budding Shakespearean, this is still the one to buy. Seeing this book in the shop was like greeting an old friend. I look forward to hundreds of wonderful hours with it.
