I found this book to be insightful and thought provoking. Clearly written with excellent life examples as well was dialogue. The only thing that really turned me off was the tone of the book in how the author speaks of parents. I wish the editor had been a little more sensitive in how the author portrays parents. Yes there are enmeshed parents and parents who constantly rescue their children, however, we are talking about a love like no other in this world. That all being said I found it to be condescending, otherwise I would give this book 10 stars!!!!
This is the guide I wish we parents had been able to find fifteen years ago. At that time, my adolescent son was in detention and court-ordered to have a mental health screening. When we received the diagnosis of a mood disorder, that was only the beginning of our long journey toward healing and better understanding. Most parental guides at the time didn't address the type of connection/ support problems our family was dealing with. Pozatek's book does, and it's a great companion to our NAMI family support group. My son isn't on a wilderness adventure (except in metaphor!), but the issues are still the same as this therapist describes. With a situation like ours, along with diagnosis and medication comes a life-long commitment to training in how to deal with the inevitable struggles and problems that come up in your loved one's daily life. Maintaining emotional attunement, establishing boundaries, and reframing are survival skills in this context. Without this training, it's almost impossible to overcome the parental tendency to "save" your child or constantly try to rescue them-- both impossible. Maybe not true for everyone, but true for many. Thank you for writing this book, Krissy Pozatek!
You think you are protecting your child but over parenting can lead to kids who can't cope.It is hard to watch your children fail or be sad.With high achieving kids, it is so easy to grant them privileges beyond their maturity. Boundaries mean conflict--it is hard not to give in especially when you think you are rewarding great kids.Rewarding great kids can lead to no boundaries and no learned control and great kids won't have the skills especially if they are not mature enough to navigate bad influences.
Offered many suggestions on how a parent can grow while their child is receiving care. Eye opening for us and showed us our daughter is in the wrong program and that there are programs which support family and parent growth. We are looking for such a program now. Thank you.
Excellent guidance for families who have or are considering having a teen participate in an outdoor wilderness program. Full of insightful advice for the parents to follow as well as great descriptions of what skills the teen is developing at the program and how the parents can align with those new skills at home.
I advise this book for parents of teens. Not just teens who are troubled or are in behavioral therapy. It has some very useful information for helping teens and parents.
Thank you Krissy Pozatek for writing such a clear, straightforward account of the process the whole family goes through when there is such "in-balance" in your family. This should be required reading for all families who have had to send their adolescent child to a wilderness program and then on to aftercare. I could not put the book down. Although our son did not have substance abuse or truancy problems-- but instead egregious opposition, there are many parallels from which to draw and pitfalls to avoid. Krissy describes a little part of us in each case-study. We are better parents for our three children as a result of her book.
Very good book all parents should read to learn new ways to communicate with teens. Unless your sailing through your kids teen years with no issues, grab a copy and learn a little. It's not a hard read and based on wilderness camp type therapy.
